PRIVATE RESIDENCE
Manhattan Beach, California
This 6,000 square foot house fills its long and narrow site to the allowable limits. The problem of vertical circulation is here solved by arranging the house into split levels. An airy sculptural staircase blends into generous landings at each split level. This all happens within a light filled shaft which is capped by a large skylight which becomes the ‘spine’ of the house.
The living areas are at the top where they get the best views of the Pacific. They flow out onto generous decks at different levels all connected together. In addition to providing outdoor living areas these decks are the secondary mode of circulation throughout the house.
